PEACE AND JUSTICE: Catholic Charities, Diocese of Youngstown, has named Robert (R.J.) Mangan to the newly created position of director of peace and justice. He began his tenure with Catholic Charities on July 25.

As director of peace and pustice, he will promote the themes of Catholic social teaching, particularly the dignity of the human person, through education, advocacy and prayer. In this role, Mangan will provide opportunities for the Catholic faithful to engage with various aspects of the church’s social mission by coordinating and collaborating with others of goodwill to influence public policy. Additional responsibilities include serving as the diocesan director for the local Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Relief Services efforts.

Mangan is a graduate of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., with a bachelor’s degree in politics and theology. Mangan spent a year in the Master of Arts (philosophical studies) program at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary from 2018 to 2019. He earned a Master of Theological Studies from the School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College in 2021.

PROTESTANT SERVICES: Protestant Family Services, a faith-based agency serving the community since 1944, is in need of donations for its back-to-school program. Shoes and school clothing are needed. CHURCH EVENT: West Mecca Bible Methodist Church, 1215 Greenville Road NE, is hosting a community yard sale to help build a parsonage so that the church can hire a full-time pastor. The church’s previous pastor, Rev. Michael Shiery, passed away in October from complications of COVID-19.

The West Mecca church usually holds the yard sale every other year, but numerous people wanted to help the church in its hour of need and contributed more goods than have been featured in past sales. Times are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 6.

FEAST DAY CELEBRATION: St. Stephen of Hungary Feast Day celebration will be Aug. 14 at the parish, 854 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, with Mass at 10 a.m. with a procession. Tickets are needed for the dinner and reservations are due by Aug. 8 at 330-743-1905.

CONCERT: Simple Gifts Interfaith Choir will present “Hearts Wide Open” 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at Hubbard First Presbyterian Church, 22 Westview Ave. The free hourlong concert will feature the 50-voice choir singing traditional, contemporary and gospel selections. Guest musicians will accompany the choir on special selections. The concert will be inside in case of inclement weather. Guests should bring a lawn chair. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the Presbyterian Church USA’s Disaster Assistance for Ukraine.

MUSIC JAM: First Congregational Church will host a music jam and ice cream social 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Wayne town hall, state Route 322. The event is sponsored by the church’s missionary society.

NEW PASTOR: The Alpha and Omega First Baptist Church, 3120 Winton Ave., Youngstown, has a new pastor, Wayne E. Stewart, who was installed recently by Pastor Earnest Stewart of Progressive E.M.B. Church. Stewart and wife, ShaPearl, have relocated with their children from Cleveland to Youngstown.
